BREEDING VISION

Our vision is to breed good looking dressage horses with excellent gaits, and a confirmation where strength is combined with elegance and suppleness.

We aim to breed healthy and happy Lusitano and Crossbred athletes with an accessible, quick mind and a stable temperament.

Choice of bloodlines

To achieve this, we have selected top quality pure Lusitano breeding mares, all outstanding movers, with a confirmation between 72 and 78 points, silver, and gold APSL medal winners. Their bloodlines include founding dressage stallions such as Spartacus, Escorial, Jasmim Plus and Violino do Retiro, all recommended by the Portuguese founding stud-book, the APSL.

Our crossbred dressage horses combine warmblood amplitude and Iberian bounce in the gaits. Back and kidney muscles are more developed and there is a gain in height (164-170).

International dressage results and a good mental disposition are our main criteria in the selection of stallions for our Lusitano broodmares.

We have beautiful crossbred foals by KWPN stallion Jovian, DSP stallion Secret, Danish warmblood stallion Downtown, and by three Oldenburger stallions; For Romance II, Quasi Gold, and the 2021 Bundes champion, Incredible. All these stallions are performing in national and international dressage competitions.

The sires of the pure Lusitano foals are renowned Portuguese dressage stallions such as Escorial (Olympic Games in 2021), Jasmim Plus and the Brazilian Dressage Stallion Violino do Retiro.

The Breeder: Christine Nevejan

I think I am one of the rare breeders who, over the last twenty years, has ridden almost all the horses born on our stud farm. I have been horse-riding since the age of six, and participated in youth dressage competitions in the Netherlands where I grew up.

Daily I am part of the education and bringing under the saddle of our foals, and these experiences are of great importance and breeding resource to me.
By riding our young dressage horses, I test and discover the results of my choices and try to learn from them.
My recurring questions are; What does this horse feel like? Does he move uphill in transitions? Can he communicate and learn fast? Does the horse have natural power? Is he/she supple, nervous, patient, strong willed, expressive, anxious, courageous? How is the sensitivity off the mouth? Is the energy of the hind legs coming forward through the back to the front? What did the parents transmit ? Does this horse have a real dressage potential? And many more!

Knowledge of bloodlines, and good marriages between them, came when I was vice president of the French Lusitano studbook AFL for 4 years. This position allowed me to be secretary of the Portuguese APSL judges during the French championships, to work together with the APSL in Lisbon to inscribe the Lusitano foals born in France, to be present during all Lusitano reproduction conformations in France.
I visited most off the stud farms in Portugal and was always moved by passionate breeders such as Manuel Braga, Joa Pedro Rodriguez, Luis Pidwell, Resina Antunes, et Vasco Freire. We stand on the shoulders of these incredible breeders and it was a privilege to share with them, under the plane trees in Beaucaire, the excitement and admiration when an exceptional foal entered the ring.

As a former journalist and filmmaker, I learned to do thorough and precise research, and this served and serves me well in the comprehension of genetics and bloodlines and in all the logistics and organization of running a stud farm.

To my delight I became a real farmer after qualifying with a French BEPA in Agriculture and I am proud to have obtained this diploma. In time I learned to master all the different aspects off running a stud farm like the management off logistics , dosage and composition of horse food and quality of hay, how to sustain and respect the 30 hectares of land on our stud farm.
I consider all above-mentioned ingredients important for healthy horses, satisfied clients, and an inspired team.

The team

To make all this possible, to run a stud farm with 30 horses, one needs a team!

Jean Pierre Brulard We are very lucky to have Jean-Pierre Brulard, who has worked with us since 2010, and who takes care of the organization and maintenance of the land and the stable. The horses wait impatiently for him every morning!
Clémentine Lesage Clémentine Le Sage is our talented rider and breeding assistant. She works with young horses with a lot of feeling and she is always interested and motivated to educate each young horse as best as possible.
Flore Hurtel We thank Flore Hurtel who was a rider and breeding assistant for 6 years and who has now started her own equestrian activity.
Nicolas Brune Our blacksmith Nicolas Brune passes every 6 weeks so that foals and youngstock are regularly checked on leg position.
Helen Osmaston Helen Osmaston accompanies our horses with Equine Shiatsu, based on Traditional Oriental Medicine. With her accupresure she helps our horses to physically and mentally relax, which in turn allows the body to heal itself. The horses love to see her enter the stable!
Jeanne Schoepps Our equine dentist Jeanne Schoepps prepares the 2-year-olds for the start of training. She advises us, depending on the dental development of the horse, if he/she is early or late in his/her growth (precoce) so that we can adapt the start of training.
Géraldine Hubert Chiché We have the chance to work with Géraldine Hubert-Chiché, in osteopathy and osteo-riding to improve the impact of the rider's posture on the biomechanics of the horse. Her holistic vision of the sport horse makes it possible to place well-being at the heart of sporting objectives and to achieve serenely performance in dressage competitions.
Sébastien Jaulin For the bringing under the saddle of some of the young stallions we work with the well-known professional horse trainer Sebastien Jaulin from the Haras du Hus stud farm and his wife Robyn.
Jaap Dijkman Jaap Dijkman has been a big sustaining force since the founding years of the stud farm and the many years to follow. It was his big pleasure to see the young horses fly through the arena during preparations for breeding competitions.
Virginie Boireau Last but not least we are fortunate to work with the prominent dressage coach Virginie Boireau who accompanies us weekly in classical dressage training and competition. She keeps us all focused, fit and inspired to improve both our horses and ourselves!
Grégoire Masson Ndjock Grégoire Masson Ndjock, who is part of our family, joined our team to support us in the daily tasks, the upkeep of the buildings and the fences, publicity, and also to keep everyone cheerful! His calm and thoughtful presence, his eye for detail in the work, and his reliable smile and good humour are a real pleasure and strength.
Yves Manzanares Our friendship with Yves Manzanares dates back to the beginning of the stud farm. As a passionate connoisseur of the Lusitanian, he has always taken the time to explain the breeding principles to everyone who wants to learn. He was essential in advising us on our choice of reproducers, and encouraged us to invest in the very best stock of brood mares, and to choose only the top Lusitanian stallions.
